SIMPLE YET EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS

Commissioned in 2004, St. Alban constructed wetland (a.k.a. reed-­‐bed filter) is one of the six of such in Rockenhausen region. The decision for a constructed wetland was governed by the principle economic activity of the region; sustainable tourism, where environmentally compatible wastewater, storm water and sludge treatment was required with minimal artificial wastewater treatment infrastructure in place.

KEY FEATURES

• To date, St. Alban constructed wetland is among the largest of such in Germany
• The two-­‐pond constructed wetland with a combined volume of 1100 m3 capacity serves 1150 population equivalents
• Two vertical flow reed bed filters have acombined area of 2750 m2
• Two reed bed filters for storm water treatment cover a combined area of 1250 m2
• The average cleaning treatment performance is 95% for COD and 96% for NH₄
• The reduction of carbon, as well as the nitrification, is not causing any issues, although the denitrification rate is low
